Turkish Speaking Carers Given Learning and Development Opportunity
Turkish Speaking Carers Given Learning and Development Opportunity
27.01.10
A group of carers from the London Borough of Haringey whose first language is Turkish are the first to benefit from the Caring with Confidence programme being delivered in a language other than English.
A leading provider in learning and development opportunities, the programmes offers carers over the age of 18 in England, the chance to expand on their skills and knowledge and improve their lives and that of the person they care for.
With a Turkish population in Haringey of over eight and a half thousand, the programme is proving popular with a strong attendance at the first five sessions which have taken place. A further two are scheduled for later this year.
Caring with Confidence facilitators, Nurcan Cahill and Sanem Sahin who are both fluent in Turkish, are delivering the programme in London through the Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company. Nurcan said: “It is great how well the sessions are being received and we are pleased to be able to provide the Turkish speaking community with the Caring with Confidence programme. Not only are we running the whole of each session in Turkish we are also making slight adaptations where we need to, to give all the carers a clear understanding.
“This is the first time that a course like Caring with Confidence has been run in Turkish and from the success so far, we are considering other areas in London that may benefit.”
Made up of seven stand alone sessions, carers can attend however many are suitable to their situation. The first session, ‘Finding Your Way’,gives an introduction of the programme, a taste of the other six sessions carers can choose from and the opportunity to start exploring some of the essentials of caring. Topics these include cover, health and wellbeing, coping, resources, emergencies at home, taking time out and communicating effectively with professionals and service providers.
Carer Ilkay Kock who is attending the Turkish speaking Caring with Confidence sessions, said: “The sessions have helped me gain useful information about being a carer. I have picked up healthy eating for myself and my mum and I am a lot happier, can control and avoid stress and cope better as a carer.
“I can now say “no”, my confidence has grown and most importantly I have learnt to take time to myself and not feel guilty. I would recommend the course to others as they could learn new things to help them in their caring role as I did.”
In order to reach out and support all carers, regardless of whether they are able, or choose to attend a local group session, Caring with Confidence also provides self-study workbooks and online sessions which carers can get involved with from home. These options allow carers to work through the sessions at their own pace and at a time convenient to them. Notes to Editors
Caring with Confidence is a programme of free, flexible support sessions enabling carers who look after a friend or relative the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge to help improve their own lives and that of the person they care for.
The programme is funded by the Department of Health and is a part of the Government’s renewed National Carers Strategy and the ‘New Deal for Carers’ which aims to improve support for carers aged 18 and over in England.
Caring with Confidence:
- helps carers build on their strengths
- gives useful information about looking after someone
- helps carers decide what positive changes they could make in their caring role.
Carers can choose how they access Caring with Confidence, either by attending face-to-face group sessions, completing self-study workbooks, accessing online sessions or a combination of all three.
