Self-study workbooks

Working in collaboration with the National Extension College (NEC) who have expertise in home-study courses, we have adapted the programme into engaging, easy-to-follow workbooks which are completely free of charge. You have the flexibility to work through these in your own time and have access to a private online support site and, if you wish, the support of a personal mentor.
You do not need to have done any kind of self-study like this before in order to do a Caring with Confidence self-study workbook. But before deciding whether it is for you, see how many of the following statements you agree with:
- I am pretty good at managing my own time and I will be able to find time to complete a workbook (roughly a total of three hours)
- I don’t have time to spend three hours away from home all in one go to attend a group session
- I feel fairly happy working through the session on my own with the support of a self-study mentor
- I am a fairly competent reader.
If the answer to all these statements is yes, then self-study could be for you. If you are not sure about one or two of the statements, could a friend, neighbor or relative help?
What are the benefits of self-study workbooks?
- work at your own pace and at a time convenient to you
- do as much or as little at a time as you want
- receive support from a self-study mentor by telephone and/or email
- pick up details of the organisations you can go to for further information and advice
- hear about stories from other carers
- build up your own collection of resources and notes – the workbooks are yours to keep
- access an online forum to talk to other carers.
