Wendy's story
Seventy-six year old Wendy Ball and her husband, Peter, 81, have been happily married for over 50 years. They have four grown up children and live in an upstairs flat in Maldon, Essex. The couple used to enjoy a fulfilled social-life, going for leisurely walks, enjoying a play or spending time with friends and family. All this changed three years ago when Peter developed dementia and Wendy became his full time carer.
Peter’s condition began with forgetfulness but as time passed this became worse and Wendy took on more responsibility for his care from washing and dressing Peter, to helping him go to the toilet. Going out became difficult, Peter would become very restless and it became too dangerous for Wendy to drive with Peter in the car as he would grab the steering wheel when he became confused.
Wendy was introduced to the Caring with Confidence sessions through the day centre Peter attended who encouraged her to come along. Wendy said: “Initially I was unsure about going but now I am pleased I went and got to meet people in similar circumstances. It was interesting to speak with other carers and learn how they deal with different situations.
“I would encourage others to go as it is good to talk about problems and discover from the other carers how to deal with them. I now know I am not alone and have come to terms with being a carer.”
